BO vs Jungfrau Pass

Hello all,

We (Spouse and I) are planning to purchase Swiss 1/2 fare travel pass but arent sure if we should complement it with BO or Jungfrau pass. Please see our travel itinerary below and let us know your thoughts:

Day 1: Travel from Zurich to Wengen.

Day 2 - Day 5 (4 days): Will spend time in doing the following excursions in Jungfrau/BO region:

Jungfrau mountain top
Lauterbrunnen valley falls
Schilthorn piz Gloria
Trummlebach falls
Grindlewald-First
Bachalpsee Lake, Murren
The Eiger
First cliff walk by Tiësto
Kleine Schniedeg
North face trail
Schynige platte
Staubbach waterfall
Grindlewald first
Gimmelwald

Day 6: Travel to Interlaken and stay here for 1 night and do the following:

Brienzer Rothorn Train Ride/Lake Brienze boat ride
Harder Kulm, Lake Thun

Day 7: Travel from Interlaken to Lucerne and stay there for 1 night and visit:

Mt Pilatus, Mt Titlis, Mt Rigi

Day 8: Travel to Zurich airport

Questions:

  • Based on this itinerary and excursions that we are interested in, seems like buying Swiss 1/2 fare card (along with a regional pass like BO or Jungfrau) still makes sense and we shouldn’t buy the regular Swiss travel pass, correct?

  • For our planned travel and activities in Jungfrau region, should we buy BO pass or Jungfrau pass?

  • It’s my understanding that we should first purchase the Swiss 1/2 fare card and then buy either BO or Jungfrau pass to get discount for having Swiss 1/2 fare card, correct?

    • Since we will be in Jungfrau / BO region for 7 days (will be coming to BO region on day 1 and will be leaving it on day 7), should we purchase the BO or Jungfrau pass for 6 days and not use it either on day 1(while traveling from Zurich to Wengen) or on day 7(while traveling from Interlaken to Lucerne)?
    • Can we start the validity of the Swiss 1/2 fare card on day 1 and BO or Jungfrau pass from day 2 so that we could use it for travel from Interlaken to Lucerne on day 7 (which will be day 6th of the pass)?

Thanks in advance!

Firs thing you need to do is be more realistic. You are trying to fit to much in. Be also aware of where everything is.

Your day 6 and 7 are impossible.
A better plan for these days would be:
Day 6: Travel to Interlaken, then take the boat to Brienz. Store your luggage at the station and do the Brienzer Rothorn, then continue to Luzern. Sleep Luzern.
Day 7: Do one of Pilatus/Titlis/Rigi. Sleep Luzern.
Day: 8: To airport for flight out.

Not that the HFC and any regional pass are idependent from each other. Buy the HFC when you arrive at the airport, and have it start immediately. The Jungfrau Pass or the BO pass you can buy later.

The Jungfrau Pass does not cover the gondola from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald and Mürren.

WengenK has, as always, good advice on itinerary.

Thanks for the response.. want to clarify that our itinerary from day 2-day 5 is a wish list, we know we won’t be able to do all but wanted to list them out so that it could help in picking up the appropriate pass (BO vs Jungfrau).

We were just in the BO area last week and struggled with the same choices. Here are some differences between the passes that may help you decide which is best for you:

The Jungfrau Pass does not cover the Brienzer Rothorn train ride. That alone may make it worthwhile. The BO Pass covers this ride.

The Jungfrau Pass also does not cover the gondola from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald to Murren. The BO Pass covers this section.

The Jungfrau Pass will not cover your travel all the way to Lucerne. The BO Pass will.

I would buy the Half Fare Card and have it start on day 1. Buy the BO pass and have it start the next day.

Use the HFC to get the discounted fare from Zurich to Wengen.

I can tell you that it will be next to impossible to do all the things you list. Prioritize. Group by geographic location. Watch the weather closely. Wake up early.

I don’t think it’s worth it to change hotels from the BO to Interlaken for your Lake Brienz activities. You are going to lose valuable time packing, traveling, checking in, etc. Do those activities as a day trip from the BO (only an hr by train).

You need to consider that weather may interfere with many of the items on your list and you need flexibility to do the most important activities when the weather is right. Also consider that many of the gondolas close early (5-6 pm), as does the Brienzer Rothorn. Harder Kulm stays open later, so do that at the end of the day.

@travelforfun: Thank you so much for your suggestions. I totally agree with you that we need to prioritize the activities that we want to do in our limited time in BO region.
Can you please share if you wore a proper hiking shoe or did you wear a regular trail running shoe? Please share the name of the show that you wore, if you don't mind and how was your experience with it.
Since we won't be doing much hiking in US, we are hesitant in spending $150-$200 on a hiking shoe that we might not wear again in months/years.
