We will have one day for a day trip out of Lucerne. Will take a boat ride one way and visit a mountain and train back. Which is a better day trip. STANSERHORN or RIGI?

You can easliy do both in one day if you get an early start. But, if i had to pick just one, it would be Rigi. Or course, the weather may decide for you.

We thought Rigi was beautiful. If you do have a Swiss Travel Pass, the journey is included.

Rigi is further away, about a half day excursion. I love the boat ride and the cogwheel train journey.
Stanserhorn is much closer to Luzern, and a quicker journey. I think the train and Cabrio open air lift was about 45 minutes total one way. Note- fabulous open air cable car!
We did Rigi in the morning, came back to the hotel to zone out for awhile, and then went to Stanserhorn for the sunset, all in the same day.
There should be online sites to access the summit cameras to check for visibility.
Hoping great weather for you so you may do both.

Just back from Swiss. We did Stoos and Rigi in one day and did Stanserhorn with a bus to Burgenstock and boat back on another day.
