Best way to reach Wasserauen from Chur

We are planning a trip in mid-September and will be taking the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur. We would like to stay at the Berggasthaus Forelle at Seealpsee, but are unsure how best to get there. It looks like we can get to Wasserauen from Chur by train, but that is about a 3 hour trip through St. Gallen. Once we get to Wasserauen, we would have quite a walk to the inn, but that may be doable. Can someone suggest a faster or better way?

Did you see the anreise (arrival) page on their website (only in German) which details the 3 possible routes on foot to get to the Berggasthaus? The long and beautiful hike, the cable car and hike and the easy(er) service road hike? https://www.gasthausforelle.ch/de/service-navigation/anreise.html

I suppose you could for lots of money get somebody to drive you to Wasserauen, but the train is quite straightforward.

The only way to Forelle or any of the mountain huts in Appenzellerland is via hiking.

The most direct route from Wasserauen up to Seealpsee is on a mostly a paved road that is fairly steep in sections. We find hiking uphill much easier than the trip back down the road. It was pretty hard on my knees. A large group of 8-10 year old school children passed us at great speed as we all descended a few years ago.

We love hiking hut to hut in Appenzellerland. Our typical hiking trip involves a couple of nights in Appenzell to acclimate to the time zone change. The hotels have allowed us to store luggage while we are hiking in the mountains for 3-4 days. The hut to hut hiking involves mid-size backpacks and hiking poles and only essential clothes. We always stay another night or two at the hotel in Appenzell after the hiking.

Mid-September is getting a bit late for hiking to the higher elevations. We were snowed out of the Lisengrat in September. Forelle won't be a problem since it is far lower.
Be sure to check out the cheese maker at the other end of Seealpsee. They offer a milk bath. Well, actually it is a whey bath. They make and sell fantastic alp cheese.
Forelle is German for trout. Make sure to have trout for a meal....it is amazing.

Thank you, I had not seen that page. We will have luggage, so this may not be for us if the only access is by foot, as the page says. I wouldn't mind the walk in good weather, but I am picturing a heavy downpour just as we prepare to leave and need to make it to a train. I will contact the inn to see if they have any alternative.

Extra luggage can be stored at St Gallen station, either at the lockers or at the manned counter. Max 96 hrs for the newer lockers, which should be the ones in St Gallen (no idea for the manned left luggage). Or you could use the luggage forwarding service to your next destination, but I have never tried it!
