Our family has a big Europe backpacking trip in March. We love to see as many different countries and cultures as we can when we go. We want to visit Liechtenstein for a day while staying in Zurich. Anyone done this? Any tips?
Thanks!
Nothing to see. You can check the box in about 10 minutes and go on to the next check box.
You used to be able to get an official stamp in your passport but no more. I don't think they do the postage stamps anymore either. It looks and sounds like any other part of German language Switzerland. The currency is the Swiss Frank.
There is a McDonalds in the centre. I say centre - more like a single normal road with a McDonalds on it. I don't remember if it has a drive through (McDrive).
The number plates on the cars are black.
We went to Liechtenstein last summer on our way to Chur, as it was only a short detour and I wanted to "check the box" and say I'd been there. I agree that it was disappointing. Little to see and lots of traffic. We actually passed entirely through Liechtenstein in about 45 minutes and check the Austria box at Feldkirch.
From Zurich, its a short drive to Liechtenstein, and I would drive.
The usual train schedule sites (DB and SBB) will show transport connections, which include switching to a bus at Sargans. Bus number 11 runs to Vaduz, Schaan, Feldkirch, and points in between. The bus is covered by a Swiss Travel Pass, or if you have a Eurail brand pass for multiple countries, then it's covered by Austria, not Switzerland.
You can see a preview of Lichtenstein in Rick's Little Europe show. He filmed this to fill a little niche, not because he recommends it for the average visitor.
Thank you guys for the advice!
