We are traveling in February from St Moritz to Varenna and would love recommendations on the best train/ car/ driver recommendations for 4 people. Thanks!
Well, you are in for a treat: one of the most scenic railways in the world, the Bernina Railway, covers that route!
You take a train to Tirano first, and you walk to an adjacent station for the connecting train to Varenna-Esino.
If you decide on a car transfer: you will pay a lot of money (Swiss prices) - I wouldn't be surprised by a 1000-franc quote - and you will hugely miss out on scenery.
Yes— take a regular train taking 2:15 from St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy. This is the route of the “Bernina Express” trains, and is considered to be among the Top 5 most scenic train rides in the world! In fact, UNESCO named the train route itself a “World Heritage Site.” It’s so spectacular—I’ve seen it four times. When you reach Tirano, you can then transfer to a train that goes on to Varenna-Esino-Perledo station on Lake Como. This takes about ninety minutes.
The town of Varenna is right on Lake Como and about a fifteen-minute ferry ride from Bellagio. Milan is about a one-hour train ride from Varenna.
You can buy your St. Moritz to Tirano train tickets at the St. Moritz train station or online at www.SBB.ch/en
The rest can be bought at www.Trenord.it or at train stations as you go.
Have a great trip!
