My husband and I will be staying in Wengen for 5 nights in mid-August, and are looking for recommendations on a nice lake for swimming in that area. I love the look of Appenzell but think that may be too far. Is there anything similar closer to Wengen? I like that it is smaller and has lots of shallow areas for jumping in than what I've seen from Lake Brienz - but maybe I am wrong there? Any suggestions on best lake for swimming within a short train ride from Wengen?
Lake Brienz at the campground has a very popular swimming area.
Lungern's lake is also very popular for swimming. Lungern is the village just north of the Brunig Pass. On the train from Wengen and then from Lauterbrunnen, you'd go to Interlaken Ost, change trains to go past Brienz, past Meiringen, past Brunig, and the next stop is at Lungern.
Luzern also has a swimming area on its lake, along the promenade.
Thank you LindaL! How long do you think the trip from Wengen to Lungern would take via the route you suggested?
It takes 2 hours to get from Wengen to Lungern by train, but it's a sensationally beautiful ride!
Trains leave hourly at xx:03 from Wengen. Transfer trains at Lauterbrunnen and at Interlaken Ost. You'll arrive at the Lungern station at xx:04 two hours after you left Wengen. The lake is down the hill. The restaurant at the train station is very good, by the way. There's the dressier area inside, beyond the pub-like area. Last time I was in there, a few years ago, they still served cream in chocolate cups, for your coffee!
