Best route through Switzerland from Lake Como to Lake Constance

In July, my husband and I will be taking a day to drive from Lake Como to Lake Constance. We would like to take a leisurely drive, with pretty scenery and a couple of nice stops. I’ve been to Zurich, Zug, and Berner Oberland before; my husband has never been to Switzerland.

Some of the routes we are considering are: Lucerne and Zurich; Appenzell and Liechtenstein; Berner Oberland (though a bit out of the way).

Are there any other routes we should consider? What would be the best route, and why?

I love Appenzell (both the main town and the mountain), so that route might be my first choice. From the top of Lake Como, you can head a bit northeast toward St. Moritz, either via Tirano and the route of the Bernina Express Bus or via Chiavenna and the route of the Palm Express Bus.
