Best public transportation choices from Wengen to Como Italy

My friend is offering me a free place to stay for three nights in the town of Como, with a view of lake Como
Her house is 5 minutes walk from The Como Lago north train station.

This is the fastest and cheapest train journey I can find from where I am staying in Wengen, Switzerland ( with family) to her place in the town of Como, Italy

Most maps state it's about a 5 to 6 hour journey

Wengen to Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken
Interlaken to Luzern
Luzern to Lugano
Lugano to Como San Giovanni

( Then I can probably get a bus, Uber, or have her pick me up to get to her house which is 20 minute walk from S Giovanni station, only a 5 minute walk from Como Lago North station)

These are the train stops the various train company sites recommend and Google Maps

But some advice I've read on this forum differs, and maybe you know better through experience than these internet sites.

Please let me know if you have better or more convenient ideas of how to do this journey.

I only have three nights to stay in Italy , so I would prefer to get to her house as efficiently as possible without spending a fortune.
I will have a Swiss Travel Pass.

And it looks like the train trip from Lugano to Como San Giovanni is only $13.
Then maybe she can drive to pick me up or I can take Uber or something.

Thanks so much for your time.

You want to use the SBB app (the train app for Switzerland) to check the route and price. I see the quickest route is just over 5 hours with changes in lauterbrunnen, interlaken, spiez, and milan.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, you would just pay from the last stop in Switzerland, which is Brig on the route i checked (or possibly other depending on which route you take).

Ok thanks, yes I was hoping my Swiss Pass will cover the train journeys in Switzerland.

Then I imagine I need to pay for the last leg into Italy.
But it doesn't seem too expensive for that last train.
I will look at the journey that takes me through Milan.

Does that seem faster than the way I was planning on going ?

Thanks for your help

If you go to the SBB app on your phone, or go to the SBB website here,

https://www.sbb.ch/en

you want to enter wengen as the from and Como S. Giovanni as the to. If you have your dates already set, you can use a specific date or a date near when you think you will make this journey. As an example, I put in Wednesday, March 23 at 8 am. It will show you all the options for that date around that time. You can see the duration of the trip, how many times you will have to change trains, etc. I like to pick the route with the least amount of train changes.

You can also click on a specific route and it will show you all the stops the train will make, where you will need to change trains and how long you will have to change trains. As you will have the Pass, it’s no big deal if you miss a train, because you can just get on the next one.

The route I mentioned above is the quickest at 5 hours and 4 minutes. There are also different routes that will have different durations and different stops. Take a look and see which one will work best for you. And once you pick a route, you can expand to see all the stops and look for the last stop in Switzerland. That is what you will need a ticket. You can plug in that stop going to como to get the price. When checking prices, just to make sure no discounts are applied.

To keep things easy, you can go to the ticket counter the afternoon/night before your trip and explain you have the Swiss Travel Pass and what to travel to Como S. Giovanni or wherever and they will get you the right ticket for the Italy part of your trip.

It might sound a little confusing, but once you play around with the app a bit, you will see how easy things are.

Getting from Interlaken area to Como is fairly awkward as it is crossing the Alps and there are not too many train routes across it (nor that many road routes).

Best strategy in my view is to take the train to Luzern. From there you can get a direct train to Como. Have a look at sbb.com.

As you are doing this for pleasure not work, if I were you I'd take it easy and take a look at Luzern and/or Lugano on the way, both of which are worth a visit.

if you take the Interlaken Ost to Luzern segment over the Brünig Pass you will benefit from a beautiful ride.

Sit on the right-hand side leaving Interlaken Ost (preferably around a table so you can swap who's facing forward and backwards) and as soon as you cross the bridge leaving the station you will go along the length of Lake Thun - as you approach Brienz look over the lake at the Giessbach Falls. When you stop at Meiringen the driver changes ends and the train reverses. So now without moving you will be on the left side of the train. Perfect place to look back at the falls as your train climbs up the cliff, and then when you get up to altitude you'll have great views of the alpine lakes off to the left. Shortly before arrival in Luzern you will stop at Alpnachstad where you can see the cogwheel train to go up Mt Pilatus on the left and the end of Alpnachersee (lake Alpnach) which is linked with Lake Lucerne on the right. Then the bigger bit of the main lake is visible briefly, also on the right, and then you're there...

very scenic

Just be aware that the fastest route, whether you travel via Luzern ( which I would prefer) or Milan, will involve long deep tunnels under the Alps.

Thank you all SO much for your very helpful replies.
I'm really glad I asked on here, because you are a wealth of information.
I really appreciate the fact that you mentioned, since I am traveling for fun, I should take in as much scenery as I can along the way, or even get off and check out Lugano, if the timing allows.

It is an awkward journey, but I've never been to Lake Como and since my friend lives there now, it seemed ashame to be that close to her and not visit.
I haven't seen her in years.

We ( my family and I) will be staying one night in Luzern and almost two full days there at the beginning of our Switzerland journey.
But it's so beautiful, it might be good to go there again.
Thanks everyone.
