Best place to Stay pre trip in Zurich also a post trip stay in Basel .
We were looking for a good post trip one day wine tour in Alsace from Basel
Any ideas?

It's not clear if you want lodging other than the tour hotels in those cities, or places NOT in those cities.

With only an evening and a day in Luzern, you could do worse than spend some extra time there before the tour starts. Nice day, take the ride up to the top of Pilatus. Visit the Lion Monument.
Basel you can find a hotel in the old city. When you stay in a hotel in Basel, you get a guest card the gives free public transport in the city. Trams fan out from the main SBB train station, which is helpful for a trip to Alsace and to return to Zurich airport.

Absolutely agree with Sam - spend the extra time at the beginning in Luzern, not Zurich.. From the rail station in the Zurich airport, you can get to Luzern in about 1.25 hours. Nothing wrong with Zurich, just much more to see and do in Luzern. They also do the transportation guest pass thing in Luzern.
