Best overnight between Ortisei, Italy & Lucerne/Lauterbrunnen?

Hey gang.

Looking for a halfway stop to overnight in our drive between Lauterbrunnen/Lucerne (we'll be staying in both places --but where we go next will determine the order in which we stay) & Ortisei. Will be traveling with our family of 6 including my 13-year old twins and my elderly (and very robust) parents.

I'm considering:

Fussen, Germany
Pontresina
Lugano
Innsbruck

Your thoughts appreciated on these options or others! Thank you.

First, a question for you. Where are you picking up the rental car and where are you dropping it? Do you know about the requirements for vignettes in Austria and Switzerland? Need for an International Drivers Permit? International drop fees?

Hey Green Bay.

We'll fly open jaws into Zurich & out of Venice. Not the most efficient trip, but we're obsessed, repeat visitors to Ortisei and Venice so that's why that's happening. :). Yup, covered on Intl Driver's Permit & the vignette situation.

A car rented in Switzerland will have a vignette already attached. If this is not a winter trip, I would suggest a route through Sargans, Klosters, Zernez, Merano, Bolzano. This avoids Austria, but also delays because the Arlberg Tunnel is currently closed and there are plenty of construction delays on that route. It will also be more scenic and pass through the Swiss National Park. You could stop in Klosters or Zernez.
