We are going on Best of Switzerland tour starting July 31st should we stay in Zurich the one night and if so what to see and where to stay? We have booked the night before the tour starts in our first tour hotel in Luzern. Have not bought plane tickets yet. They are so confusing.. we haven't decide what we might do for a few days after tour.. seems a shame to just go home..LOL
Thanks
It looks like the tour will already cover Luzern pretty well. I think Zurich is worth a day tacked onto the end of your trip. The RS Switzerland book has a section on Zurich, so review that for stuff to do. Zurich has fun nightlife and is a good place for window shopping. It's not typically a big draw for tourists, but it's a pleasant city to spend a day in. It's also a major rail hub, so if you get the bug to visit other parts of Europe it's a great place to depart from.
The RS tour ends in Bern, so you could also do an extra day there at the end. Bern has a direct rail link to the Zurich airport and only takes about 70 minutes to get there. You could easily make a mid-morning flight from Zurich if you spend you last night in Bern or Luzern.
How long are you traveling to get to Switzerland, and many times will you be going to Switzerland in the future? Seems like you should stay as long as you can to make the most out of your visit and see as much of this beautiful country as you can. There are recent posts on the travel forum about sites to see in Zurich. Definitely worth spending time there to get the most out of your trip.
If I had the choice of what to do I would fly into Switzerland a few days before the tour starts (at least 2) and then head from the Zurich Airport to one of the lakeside villages just outside of Lucerne. Look at Weggis and specfically the SeeHotel Gotthard on the banks of Lake Lucerne...

Absolutely stunning area and great for relaxation and for exploring the Rigi. It's a short boat ride on the lake steamers from Weggis back to Lucerne.
