Best of Europe 14 days, Switzerland Question

Day 5 of our itinerary reads:

"Day 5: Hiking Day in the Swiss Alps

The day is all yours to enjoy some of Europe's most dramatic scenery. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain excursion that combines the local narrow-gauge railway, a gondola lift, and a spectacular Alpine walk above the tree line, surrounded by a panorama of cut-glass peaks…or ride a gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and hike down…or for a more restful day, just wander through the valley and walk to the thundering Trümmelbach Falls: a unique set of waterfalls encased behind the valley walls"

All of the above sounds wonderful. Is it possible to do it all in one day without feeling too rushed? What has been your experience? If we can only pick one or two, which should we choose?

This is our very first trip to Europe! :)

Enjoying all those activities on the same day would be a bit much (IMO). While it might be feasible, it wouldn't allow much time to enjoy any of them. I'd probably pick two from the list that look most appealing to you. Of course, your RS guide will be the best one to provide advice on that. The weather at the time may also dictate which activities to choose.

IMO, the ride to the Schilthorn is one activity to put at the top of the list as it's a spectacular ride, somewhat unique and can be done even if it's raining. The large revolving restaurant on the top was used in the filming of the James Bond movie, On Her Majesty's Secret Service many years ago, so if you get a chance to watch that prior to your trip, the experience will be more interesting for you.

What time of year will you be taking the tour? If you just want some light hiking, you might consider taking the Allmend-Hubel Funicular from Mürren to the the top and then hike back. It's a very pleasant and easy hike (all downhill).

Congratulations on your first trip to Europe!

I took the tour last year. Our guide took us up to the Schilthorn in the morning for breakfast and arranged a meet up time back in Murren for a walk through town and hike down to Gimmelwald, where many of us stopped for a drink. My friend and I split off at this point to have a picnic lunch on our room’s balcony. We then took the gondola down to Stechelberg and hiked for about an hour looking at the falls. Clouds were moving in by late afternoon so we made it back to the hotel before it started pouring.

If you’re energetic and the days are long then it’s certainly possible.....but upit would be a longish tiring day. Another option is to hike the valley from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen are the gondola back up to Grutschalp and take the train back to Murren. Check the timetable to see what the timing for the last train is

Edit: I agree with Ken, pick 2.

When I did the 21day Best of Europe we did all of these on our one day.

Our guide offered an option to join him going up to the Schilthorn first thing in the AM (we stayed in Stechelberg that year), then we descended together and the bus driver drove us to Lauterbrunnen where we joined the guide for another optional trip up to Mannlichen, walked to Kleine Scheidegg, again caught the cog train together back down, bused back towards Stechelberg to Truemmelbach Falls. From there you could walk back to the hotel or hop back on the tour bus for the short distance to the hotel. It was a full day. We had a very early start to catch the first gondola up at maybe 730? Then got back just before dinner.

I’d agree with the advice to see what the weather looks like and to see if your guide offers any options.

You’re staying in Lauterbrunnen, right? That gives you an easy option of doing the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg hike (which is the one you described with the cog train) as you take the train up from the Lauterbrunnen station. It’s also easy to take the gondola/train combo up from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren, do the short walk thru town to the Schilthornbahn to get the gondola up to the Schilthorn too.

BTW, Just budget a wad of money for transportation this day. Don’t blink at the cost, just do it. Your memories of this are will be completely worth it. Even 4 years later this day stands out as one of the most amazing tour days ever!! Just thinking about it puts a smile on my face!!
