My husband and I will be staying in Murren for several nights in early September. We are looking for a hike to do each day with views.
We are up for 3-10 mile hikes.
Is Murren a good home base or should we switch to another location?
Any recommendations for favorite hikes?
*North Face hike counterclockwise from Allmendhubel to Murren (optional detour to Sprutz waterfall)
*Birg to Murren ridge hike via Bryndlii
*Chilchbalm from Gimmelwald (optional add on walking from Murren to Gimmelwald)
*Gimmelwald to Obersteinberg/Tanzbodeli (need to be in good shape for this one)
*Grutschalp to Murren (this is more of a walk than a hike, but nice)
*Murren Via Feratta
Others in the area that are great
*Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (detour to Fallbodensee) and then continue on to Wengernalp
*Schynigge Platte Panorama ridge hike to Oberberghorn
*E-bike/Bike or walk the Lauterbrunnen Valley all the way to the back past Stechelberg (bike rentals - Imboden)
*First to Schynigge Platte
Thank you!
Big thumbs up for
Birg to Murren ridge hike via Bryndli
This was the most memorable hike I did in the valley. This map shows it reasonably well (http://www.gimmelwald.com/pics/gimmelwald/hikemap.jpg):
- Take the cable car to Birg
- Walk around the back of Birg station and go left (looking uphill) to Grauseeli, an alpine pond
- Walk trail #11 (as shown on the map) across the face of the Schilttal (not as steep as it looks on the map)
- Walk down the spine of the Wasenegg ridge to Bryndli
- The last hundred metres or so to the Bryndli spire is moderately steep, but well worth it for the 360 degree views
- Back to trail #11 until you get to the trail that runs along the creek
- look for signs to Spielbodenalp, where you can get a meal and a drink
- don't miss Sprutze waterfall, where you can actually walk BEHIND the waterfall
- from there an easy stroll back to Murren
Here is the route: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/switzerland/bern/birg-bryndli-murren?u=i
Another good option is Murren to Rotstockhutte - https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/switzerland/bern/murren-to-rotstockhutte?mobileMap=false&ref=sidebar-static-map&u=i
As you can tell if you look at the maps I linked, all these trails converge...so there are tons of different routes you can take. For example you can do Murren to Rotstockhutte there and back on the same route or on the return you can go up on the ridge and to do part of the Bryndlii hike. Also the Birg to Murren via Bryndlii hooks up with the end of the North Face hike I mentioned from Allmendhubel and offers the option to detour to Sprutz waterfall. There are lots of ways to combine or alter a ton of hiking around Murren depending on the distances/elevations you want to do in one day.
A good easy/moderate starter is North Face counterclockwise from Allmendhubel. The Birg/Bryndlii/Rotstockhutte options all take the vibe of North Face and elevate it to the next level. None of them are "difficult" but are a little more effort than the North Face hike.
On the same level of difficulty as the North Face hike would be the Oberberghorn up at Schnyigge Platte. Very easy but great reward for how easy it is: Mannlichen/KS/Fallbodensee/Wengernalp.
