Best Exit Strategy to Munich

We will be traveling to Europe in November and plan on staying Switzerland for 4 or 5 nights. We are coming from Belgium so will arrive late Monday afternoon Nov 11 through Basil, so we planned on staying our first night in Bern. From there we will head to the Berner Oberland area as we love the mountains and it's our 25th Anniversary. My questions is should we stay in Lauterbrunnen for 3 nights in a B&B or Grindelwald Hotel for 2 nights and then maybe head to Lucerne or another area for a couple nights making our way towards Germany so that we arrive in Munich Saturday afternoon. We will not have a car, and for sure hope to see Jungfrauoch as one of our activities,

We fly home on Sunday the 17th and of course want to maximize our time, however from what I can tell, we are going to be there during the in-between season and some things places/activities will not be not open.

the Jungfrau has changed a lot over the years. It’s now packed with bus loads of tourists and not nearly the same pleasant experience it used to be...imho

I doubt that Jungfraujoch will be packed with tourists in mid-November, since it wasn't last March, at the tail end of ski season. And the train is operating on a test date of November 13. I would stay the 3 nights in Lauterbrunnen to have a full day for exploring each side of the valley, and in case of low cloud cover or bad weather.

kbrackett11, IMO, I'd suggest skipping Bern and going right to the Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald area (Luzern a second choice). Its only a couple of hours more to get there, and that's really where you want to be. You only have a short time, and with travel days, even less time to see anything. I'd spend the whole time in one place, and then take the train all the way to Munich.

Thanks all for the input. We are now committed to the staying in Lauterbrunnen for at least 3 nights and I like the suggestion of pushing on two more hours to stay there for 4 evenings instead and skip staying in Bern but that looks to be a 9 hour trip, yikes!. My hesitation is that there is a fair in Basil that I'm wondering if we should stop at during our travels that intrigues me. Any input there?

That said still on the fence on stopping and checking it out or that we likely won't get back to? Thinking maybe a good Bern is a "Go back to option" in case the weather is bad to see the mountains.

And I am looking to dinner suggestions in Lauterbrunnen/Murren area on our Anniversary date of Tuesday Nov 12th. Laura, I think you mentioned something about a test run on Nov 13th, please tell me more?

So back to leaving Friday through Zurich after four days in the area. I found a suggestion of stopping in Lindau, Germany on the way to Munich so we are considering stopping there on Friday before heading to Munich on Saturday. I like the idea of being a bit closure to our exit point. We fly out Sunday morning at 9:55am. Thanks for the input my fellow travelers. KP

Did you check the trains to Munich for length? It is a deceptively long-ish trip just from Zurich to Munich--4.5 hrs I believe.

And I've not been to Lindau--and not sure what your interests are--but I'd spend all the time I could enjoying Munich, one of the top 5 most liveable European cities, and a true gem in my opinion.

Not sure where you are with visiting Bern at this point, but it really is a lovely small city. I was there on Christmas day and everything was closed, but I had a Swiss person show me around and it was beyond charming. Visiting the mountains can be unpredictable any time of the year, but more predictably fogged-in in winter, so a back up plan is a good idea.

I recommend an overnight stop in Lindau, it is a very pretty lakeside town and breaks the surprisingly long journey to Munich nicely.
