Thinking of using a few cities as a home base and doing day trips by rail. Any suggestions for a few towns for a 4 day stay in each city near good scenery (all the scenery is good)
A few cities in four days ? A bit hectic , and more than a bit unreasonable . Pick one , and make your day trips from there . Luzern is a good choice - A day on the lake steamer to Vitznau , and to the top of Mt. Rigi . An excursion to Mt. Pilatus via Alpnachstad . Perhaps a longish jaunt to the Bernese Oberland . as well . And leave a day for the City of Luzern .
No. Maybe I wasn't clear. 4 days in EACH city/town
OK , Sorry about that. In that case , four days in The Bernese Oberland would also be good in addition to Luzern . Another good base would be Montreux ( or Vevey ) , from which you can visit Lausanne and the area up into the hills above Lake Geneva via the Golden Pass route . Another possibility might be ( from Montreux ) the area in The Valais , and perhaps Zermatt .

My first trip to Switzerland in Sept. 2021 I based in Basel, Lauterbrunnen and Lucerne. My second trip in June 2022 I based in Montreux, Wengen and Lucerne.

On my first trip to Switzerland, I chose a 4 night base in 3 different language regions: Vevey, Luzern and Lugano, plus a few days near Zurich at the start and end of the trip.
