We r planning a 3 - 4 night stay and trying to choose a convenient base in the area. We are looking at Murren, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I think Rick likes Murren but we are open to suggestions. BTW we r a senior couple and hiking is not a priority activity for us Lol. Thanks, Jim S.
Murren is a village of 450 residents with spectacular views of the Eiger. Munch and Jungfrau mountains and the Lauterbrunnen Valley below.
Lauterbrunnen is the transit junction where visitors arrive by train to get to Murren and Wengen. It has become very hectic in recent years. It also has the least amount of sunshine as the mountains eclipse the sun during much of the day. Grindelwald is a much larger town of 4,000 and lacks the village-like atmosphere of Murren.
I agree that it’s Murren that offers the greatest views for the quintessential Swiss Alps experience. One of the most spectacular walks you can take is from Murren to the nearby village of Gimmelwald. It’s an easy walk on a paved path and takes about 45 minutes.
Nothing else quite like it.
Last summer my girlfriend and I stayed for two nights in Grindelwald, a place called Hotel Steinbock. We were driving, and they had free parking onsite. Lotsa shops and restaurants within a short walk there. Drove and parked at Lauterbrunnen station to take the train up to Wengen for an afternoon, which was great. (My girlfriend is weird about gondolas, otherwise I would've gone to Murren. She was also recovering from a foot injury, so she too was not feeling a hike.) Worked out well for us, under the circumstances.
