My family is planning to follow Rick Steves Switzerland's Best 2-week trip by train. We will be traveling by all 4 Panoramic Express. Any opinions on the itinerary.
Yes, as with all of his itineraries, it moves too fast with too many two-night stays. I would extend time in at least a couple of locations to 3 nights.
You are right about too many stops.
We are planning to fly into Zurich and out of Geneva. We are skipping Appenzell and Zurich.
Our itinerary is as follows: 3 nights in Luzern; 1 night in Lugano by Gotthard PE; 2 nights St. Moritz by Bernina Express; 2 nights in Zermatt by Glacier Express; 3 nights in Berner Oberland and 2 nights in Montreaux by Golden Pass.
I haven't been to that section of Switzerland, but I think I've seen suggestions to stay somewhere other than St. Moritz. Maybe Pontresina? Perhaps someone who actually knows something will post.
Thanks for your reply.
Rick Steves recommends Pontresina. We will look into it.
I agree with the others - it moves too fast. Last summer I followed a somewhat shuffled version of the itinerary (skipping Zermatt and the Glacier Express). It took me close to three weeks and for me that was a good pace.
I spent a night in Pontresina to break up the Bernina Express. It was a charming town and I wouldn't have minded spending another night.
That’s much better than Rick’s race! Pontresina is much more charming than St. Moritz. We spent an entire week there last autumn!
