We are taking the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz and also want to experience the Bernini X. I believe it goes from Chur to Tirano and back but doesn't stop at St Moritz northbound. What would be the best strategy to ride the Berinin? Should we continue on to TIrano and return to Chur after overnighting? We would then continue on to Zurich. Or should we overnight in St Moritz after the Glacier X, and just take regular trains back to Chur as I understand they travel over the same route as the Bernini? We will have first class Swiss Travel Passes. Thx in advance for any recommendations. Jim S., Chicago
You can get the Bernina Express just outside of St Moritz at Pontresina. There is a short connecting train between the two.
Better yet, you can just take a direct regular train to Tirano and save yourself the seat reservation fee. Same tracks, same scenery, uncrowded, windows that open for better photos.
I've taken the Bernina Express and many other trains in Switzerland. The scenery along Bernina is spectacular. I do agree with Sam's idea to take a regular train on the Bernina Express route (which starts in Tirano). Easier, cheaper and less busy.
Oh, and you can take the Bernina Express direct to Tirano from St Moritz. There is one at 9:17 am.
We also used the regional train on the Bernina Express route a few years back, and it was a great experience. ( And, pls double check your spelling. ) Enjoy!
the Man in Seat 61 has tons of info on the Bernina Express, and there are dozens of vlogs on Youtube as well.
The Bernini Express: carved from Carrera marble.
If Trenit Turistici Italian decides to run a Rome - Naples train via the costal route they could call it the "Bernini Express" :-)
To clear a few things up:
The Bernina Railway is the railway line from St. Moritz to Tirano. It passes through Pontresina. The railway from St. Mortiz to Chur is the Albula line, and there is also a line from Pontresina to Scuol that connects with the Albula line at Samedan.
The Bernina Express is a series of trains that operate over the Berina Railway in addition to the regular trains. Traditionally the Bernina Express started in st. Moritz. There were in the past through cars from Chur. I was on one of those. We got shunted around twice, once in Samedan, once in Pontresina.
Recently the RhB has obtained railcars that can actually run all the way from Chur to Tirano. The Bernina Railway runs on a different overhead supply then the rest of the network, hence in the past there was no through running. But now with the new cars they can run from Chur, so one or two Bernina Express services a day now start in Chur, and do take the Albula line till Samedan (the same route the Glacier Express takes) but in Samedan in stead of going to st. Moritz they go to Pontresina and joing the Bernina Railway there.
For some reason a lot of people seem to thing that the Chur - Tirano train is the original Bernina Express and completely miss that it runs half its route on the same tracks as the Glacier Express...
So if you are going to be in st. Moritz just do st. Mortiz - Tirano and back on the Bernina Express.
Thanks WengenK !!! This does clarify some of the slightly contradictory information I have read in different places. Since I only went as far as Pontresina, the other details did not matter to me but at least now I can avoid repeating potentially misleading information.
Ok, so I don't think it matters, but I'm a little confused. I bought tickets and seats for the Bernina Express. We boarded a Bernina Express train in Chur. We made one stop on the way to Tirano and never changed trains.
