Bernina Express/route in April

We are planning on taking the Bernina route from Chur to Varenna. Most likely on the regional train, rather than the Express (or a mix of the two). We’d like to make an overnight stop along the way and we’re looking at the following cities. Bever, Pontresina, Le Prese, Ospizio Bernina, St Moritz. We’d only atop at one over night in route to Varenna. Thoughts?

I understand that some of the places I mentioned may just be station stops. I was just looking at a map and pulling off names, hence my question here, since I am sure some of you have done this and are much more knowledgeable than I 🤗

St Moritz is a nice (and pricey) stop. Pontresina and Poschiavo have amazing scenery. Tirano (the end-point of the Bernina line) itself is a pretty town with nice restaurants, some hotels and prices much lower than in Switzerland

Pontresina is a smaller town, covered in Rick's Switzerland book with 3 recommended hotels, and I enjoyed staying there for two nights. Easy to day trip to Samedan (for more of the region's sgraffitto building decoration) or to the bigger, likely more expensive city of St. Moritz.

Never consists of one little guesthouse, Gasthaus Spinas:

I have been tempted to stop there overnight as a good friend has the last name Spinas! But I wouldn’t do it in April when it could be quite barren (if they are even open).

Similarly, Ospizio Bernina is just a stop for this hotel:

Seems to lack the charm of Gasthaus Spinas, so not tempting at all to me. But I was interested in Berninahaus at the Bernina Suot stop:

I actually made a reservation there, but then changed to Garni Laager in Samedan to have a bit of a village around, and a grocery store. We went in October, and it was rather barren going over Bernina Pass, so I was glad we did not try to stay at Berninahaus.

These places are really meant for hikers and skiers. In April I think you would be much happier in a village or town. Pontresina is a nice town/ski resort, not as pricy as St. Moritz.

We’ve decided to spend our extra day in Chur before leaving and go straight through from Chur to Varenna 🤗
