I am looking at taking the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz. I understand that I cannot board the Bernina Express northbound in St Moritz to Chur. Is this correct? Thx, Jim S.
You will pass through Chur on the Glacier Express before reaching St. Moritz. Are you planning to skip the most scenic section of the Bernina Express, from St. Moritz to Tirano? That section is the reason people rave about the Bernina Express.
In any case, you do not need a Bernina Express train to return to Chur. Between St. Moritz and Chur, both the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express use the Abula line, along with regular regional trains.
From your requests for hotel and restaurant recommendations it looks like you plan to stay in Lucerne, Montreux, Zermatt and Chur.
Does that mean you will ride the Glacier Express the whole way from Zermatt to St. Moritz, then turn around and ride back to Chur for your overnight?
That is another 2 hours on the train, if you take one without changes. Those depart St. Moritz at :07 after each hour (IR 38 or RE 38).
The real Bernina Express train does not go to St. Moritz northbound . At least not on the schedule I see. After Pontresina it heads to Bergun and Tiefencastel.
Actually during the main season there is one northbound Bernina Express train a day that goes from Tirano to St. Moritz, arriving there at 12:35. But it does not go on to Chur. This is BE train # 972. See the schedules here:
The Chur - Tirano and vv Bernina Express services do not call at St. Moritz. Look at a map an you will understand. Eg. here: https://www.rhb.ch/en/service-souvenirs/rail-network
However if you travel to st. Moritz on the Glacier Express you will have seen that route already, as it takes the same route as the Bernina Express till Samedan,

There are hourly regular trains from St Moritz to Chur that travel the same tracks as the Bernina Express, but with no seat reservation fee.
Jim, you have started 9 threads on your Switzerland trip, and you have not returned to provide feedback on any of them. These forums work best as an interactive process—- you ask for information or recommendations, and people make suggestions or provide answers.
It you are happy with the answers you say “thank” snd that’s it. If you need clarification or would like some different options or suggestions, you can say so snd people will adjust their recommendations. As it stands now, now one can tell if you even read the aresponses they took the time to provide.
