We will be travelling from Lucern to our final destination of Lake Como. We want to take the Bernina Express to Tirano, then train to Como are. From Lucern, would it be best to head to Chur or St. Moritz for an overnight stay before getting on the Bernina? We realize it will be a lot of train travel on the day we go to Como but it will be scenic and relaxing.
do you intend on using the once or twice a day named fancy trains, or the every hourly normal trains, same route, same stops, same views?
It will make a big difference. The named trains leave Chur pretty early - adding in a trip from Luzern will have to be very early.
Here's a overview:

We will travel from Lucerne to either Chur or St. Moritz the day before getting on the Bernina. I’m just wondering if either place has an advantage over the other.
I think Chur would be a better choice if you are looking to save a few shekels. St Moritz usually gets panned on this forum for being overpriced and not all that attractive. Pontresina, on the other hand, does get a lot of love, and it is on the direct route to Tirano. It is a short train detour from Samedan, just before St Mortitz.
Stay in Chur. Much easier transport option. Nice city. Bernina Express doesn't leave THAT early, its about 8:30. We stayed in Chur and had a very nice evening before our train on the BE.
Another option to continue on to Pontresina. Beautiful spot, Bernina Express left at 10:25 AM last August. We were only there overnight but wish we had spent an extra day. Rick does not care for St. Moritz, we only changed passed through there, it was perhaps 15 minutes to Pontresina. Recommend the Hotel Steinbock highly.
I also feel it would be best to stay in Chur. You may want to arrive there fairly early so that you have a bit of time to look around, as it's a historic city. Is your final destination the town of Como or some other location on the lake?
