Hello, I secured 2nd class reservations for June 8th. Leaving from Chur at 8:17. I believe I now have to buy the tickets for the tickets. Would someone please advise what type of ticket I should buy. This will be the only train ride in Switzerland as once we get to Italy, we will be renting a car for most of the trip. Thank you for any advice
How are you getting to Chur?
Otherwise: Just go to www.sbb.ch, select your train, buy ticket...
good point. We are taking a train from Zurich airport, staying overnight in Chur and boarding next morning.
For June 7th - A point to point ticket for Zurich Flughafen to Chur - 47 chf per person
For June 8th - A Saver Day Pass to cover the Bernina Express to Tirano - 52 chf per person
The Saver Day Pass is a slightly cheaper option than the point-to-point ticket for the Bernina (66chf), but it needs to be bought in advance, as the price rises the closer you get to the date of travel and eventually isn't available at all.
For your June 7th ticket, point to point is good for any train on the route from Zurich Flughafen to Chur and the price doesn't change, so you can get it now if you want or wait until you're at the airport. You can pick a time you think you'll make, but if you miss it with a point to point ticket you just get the next available one.
The Man In Seat 61 has great instructions on how to purchase Bernina Express tickets and seat reservations if you want them. https://www.seat61.com/
And unless it will ruin things for you, Youtube is full to the brim with videos of that route, in both directions, in all seasons.
The Saver Day Pass is a much cheaper option than the point-to-point ticket for the Bernina, which is 154 chf, but it needs to be bought in advance, as the price rises the closer you get to the date of travel and eventually isn't available at all.
My look at the SBB site is 66 CHF for Chur to Tirano 2nd class point-to-point (no Half Fare Card) or 52 CHF with a 2nd class Saver Day Pass bought now.
Ya I have no idea where that 154chf came from. I was doing calculations for multiple people and I must have copied and pasted the wrong line. But the advice still stands 😊
Saver Day Passes start at CHF 52 (if you don't have a half-fare card) when initially released 6 months before the date of travel. The SDP price will escalate as the travel date approaches, depending on how fast others buy them, I think. I don't think the rate of price increase is predictable.
