Berner Oberland - Shoes suggestion

Hi.

For a 3 days trip to BO in Mid July with kids, Murren as base, do we need to especially buy new hiking shoes or our existing trainers/joggers will do ?

For casual hiking your trainers are fine if they have good tred.
That is what i used on my past trip to BO.
Enjoy, it is a beauiful area.

Existing shoes are fine, unless you're doing "technical hikes" (the kind with equipment, like crampons and ice axes). There can be mud, bits of snow, and even animal manure as you get higher up (like Allmendhubel or the Maenlichenn to Kleine Scheidegg walk, both of which I highly recommend), so flip-flops and high heels won't work, but just about any other kind of footwear will.

If you do get the bug to do some real hikings, I have seen some sporting shops in Lauterbrunnen and Murren rent hiking boots. The advantage is that they are broken in. I don't know about the cost. Never do a real hike in new boots.

Tennis shoes are fine for almost every trail in the area, since most are packed gravel. The one exception I can think of would be Schynige Platte to First. That has much more rocky footing so a thick sole and maybe ankle support would be good. Hiking poles are useful there too.

We are headed there in August for the first time. I am planning on trail running shoes with a rock plate. Feels like a tennis shoes but way more tread (grip on gravel), I use them for hiking in the pacific northwest.
