Berner Oberland Regional Pass Coverage Clarification

Hello,

I will be spending 6 days in Wengen the last week of August. Based on what we plan on doing, the BO Regional Pass makes the most sense for us. However, there seems to be a bit of confusion as to what the actual discount is for going from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch. RS indicates on his site here that "The highest mountain lifts are either 50 percent off during the validity of the pass or have special prices (e.g., Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, or Mürren to the Schilthorn are 50 percent off)", however, going on line on various sites, I am seeing both 50% and 25% off. Additionally, the BO Regional website map appears to simply say "reduced fare". Is there any consensus on what the actual price/discount is?

Bonus Question for my wife:

We arrive in BO area by train on Sunday morning. Does anyone know if there are any small grocery stores in the area that are open on Sunday? Appears all of the Coop's are closed on Sundays. She is a bit Bob Wiley-like ( 😁)and likes to be sure cereal and coffee are available in the AM for her.

Thanks!

The map key distinguishes between free travel (solid line), half-fare (dotted line) and reduced price (lighter dotted line with a B). So this suggests it is 25% reduction.

I think Co-op is pretty much it for groceries. There is a very good bakery in Wengen that may be open on a sunday.

Sunday store openings, and Switzerland, don't go together well. If you really want supermarket items on a Sunday, buy them the day before (wherever you will be), and remember that Saturday store hours, themselves, are shorter than Monday through Friday ones.

I haven't seen the Coop in Wengen; Rick says it's larger than the other ones in the Berner Oberland. But I have seen the ones in Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, and these two are quite small. They are no where near the size of the Coop's in cities like Luzern or Lausanne, and are more like mini-marts.

I don't know where you are coming from, but if it's Luzern, there is an Aperto in the lower level of the train station open every day, including Sundays, from 5:30 AM to midnight. It's not as nice as Coop, but gets the job done for cereal and coffee. If you're coming from Lausanne, there is both an Aperto and a Coop in the train station open 7 days a week, 6 AM to midnight; the Coop is nicer and larger. Note that the Coop is harder to find; it's under track 9, next to the parking garage entrance. It's on the western side, and is accessed via the underground passage with the ramp. The eastern passageway access, with the elevator, does not go to the Coop.

Those are the only two cities I can speak of from personal experience, but the pattern is clear; if you want to buy something from a grocery store on a Sunday, go to a big city's train station.

Thanks for the replies.

Ken, both google and my RS book showed Coop's in the area are Closed on Sundays, but your post and link suggests otherwise. So, "Bob" may be in luck after all. If not, she will be out of luck as we are staying in a rental, not an actual hotel. Good day to all.

Jay,

Since the link I provided appears to be the "official" Coop website, I suspect the store will be open on Sunday. If "Bob" is really concerned, you could buy a box of cereal at one of your other stops and a few containers of milk in one of the rail stations (one for cereal, one for coffee). To guarantee that "Bob" will have coffee, pack along a box of Starbucks Via Instant, which is not "instant coffee" in the usual sense but rather very finely ground real coffee.

There's always a solution for these minor problems.

Hopefully you won't be tieing "Bob" to the mast of a sailboat on Lake Thun / Brienz!

On an extended stay in Lauterbrunnen, we found the Coop in Interlaken to be useful. It is large with lots of products and has city hours. You could, perhaps, stopover there for 1/2 an hour and get your survival items. It is right across from the train station.

I can't resist, but hopefully "Bob" won't be packing along a Goldfish.
