Berner Oberland Region in early May

I am very excited because I got tickets on AA to Zurich from Orlando for $566.00 round trip from May 11 - 18, 2018.
I will be staying in Muerren and hope to do a lot hikes/walks,
But now I am thinking that a lot of the hiking trail may not be open and that many of the gondolas to the higher regions may not operate until the end of May. Can anyone let me know what its like if they have been to the Berner Oberland region at this time of the year. I am sure there will be a lot to keep me busy but I just wanted to include some walks in the higher regions around Kleine Scheidegg and I think the lifts to Mannelichen does not operate until late May. Thanks!

I've not been in May, but have been in early June a few times. One time there was a fairly large snow field on the trail between Mannlichen and Klein Scheidegg. It is really going to be dependent on the snowfall next year. I would imagine you will have some hiking possibilities, but not nearly as much as later in the summer.

We are going back in summer of 2018 in July to ensure all the hikes will be open and snow free.

In early May none of the higher elevation trails will likely be open. This would include Maennelichen-Kleine Scheidegg trail, the Eiger trail, and probably the Schynige Platte trail. There will be plenty of low elevation trails to keep you busy, though.

Stepping foot into Murren is like stepping into paradise. If you've never been there then continue on with you plans. There are residents who actually live in Murren and call it there home so the village never entirely "shuts down". Even if your hiking just involves the various trails like Murren->Gimmelwald or Murren->Grutschalp along the railway line just go and do it. You'll not be disappointed.

Thank you, Tim. I have been to Muerren before. This is my 4th visit! I truly love it there and you're right I can do the lower elevation trails and have a great time. The scenery and location of Muerren is the reason for going anyway.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
