Considering a trip from Paris in mid-September to see the wonderful views ... but my serious hiking days are behind me (if they ever were!) How about staying in Murren and strolling some trails, taking cable cars to one or two mountain peaks, etc.? Advice welcomed for a couch potato's 72nd birthday trip.
The scenery is well worth making the trip and is easily accessible by the gentle transport modes that you mentioned. I've never made a serious hike there. See a summary under Berner Oberland - At a Glance and lots more detail in Rick's guidebooks.
The Swiss tourist board provides lots of maps, but this transport mapis one I have handy, if you click on "Discounts."

Laura, there are easy, flat trails, more like walking than hiking. I think a person could have great time there without hiking at all. Yes, the gondola up the Schilthorn is what you want to do.
Thanks for the quick responses, Laura and Stan!
I stay in Murren every year - it's an absolutely stunning place, and I am DEFINITELY NOT a hiker. I like to walk around the area and see the sites which is easy to do.
There are lots of opportunities for gentle walking.
Mürren following the train line back to Grütschalp either all the way or just half way to the intermediate station with a cheese maker and restaurant. Changing views over the valley to Wengen, and views over your shoulder to the big mountains.
The gentle stroll down to Gimmelwald where you can continue up or down by cablecar or walk back up to Mürren.
A stroll along the base of the cliffs as you follow the river in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the river fed by many waterfalls.
The place is loaded with lovely easy strolls and incomparable beauty.
Laura,
There is one hike that you might be able to manage. Take the Allmend-Hubel Funicular up the hill from Mürren, and then walk back down (as I recall, it should take about two hours). It's all downhill and not difficult at all, and when you get down into the valley there are a couple of small hotels / restaurants where you can stop for a "cool one" (assuming they're open). One of the most pleasant parts of that hike is listening to the cow bells.
The most level trail is also the best one: Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. If you can walk for 1.5 hours on a level well-maintained trail, you will see the best panoramic views in the area. (Take the train from Murren to Grutschalp, cable car down to Lauterbrunnen, train from there up to Wengen, Wengen cable car up to Mannlichen. Yes, takes some different transports to get there, but each of those is scenic as well. On a clear day I guarantee you'll love it.
Tim, Nigel, Ken and shoe -- thanks for the info and encouragement!
We enjoyed some easy walks staying Lauterbrunnen BUT really just enjoyed the lovely train rides up to Kleine Schedig and Murren. Sat over lunch, wine and enjoyed the scenery. Then quiet walks in Lauterbrunner to hotel with stop for wine or coffee on the way. Lovely - you will enjoy it.
