Berner Oberland Advice

My wife, 6 year old daughter, and I are going to be traveling from Lake Como to spend 3 days in the Berner Oberland region and I need some advice. We are staying in Oberried am Brienzersee and we'll be using the Berner Oberland travel pass to get around. My initial plan was to spend a day exploring Interlaken, one day traveling to the Schilthorn via Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp to Mürren with a side trip to the playground at Allmendhubel, and then a final day traveling to Wengen via Grindelwald and Männlichen (another playground here).

I'm wondering now if the Grindelwald>Männlichen>Wengen day would be redundant, and if we should take a day trip to Luzern instead on the Interlaken-Luzern Express. Will we be missing out by not visiting an historic Swiss city? This portion of our trip is coming at the end of our two week stay in Paris, Milan and Lierna (Lake Como).

No, it is quite different and definitely something a 6 year old will enjoy!

If you want to drop anything, then drop Interlaken.

Have you looked at Ballenberg? Lots of interactive things for kids to do and fun farm animals, etc. Catch the bus in Brienz, so it is somewhat close to where you will be staying.

When is this wonderful family trip? Where are you staying in the BO?
And - have you checked the rail track work from Varenna to Tirano, if that's your route?
Have a great adventure!

We'll be leaving in exactly one month for Paris (11Jul-25Jul). We do know about the rail maintenance in Lake Como for the Winter Olympics. We have rented a car so our travel between locations will be via car. We're staying Lierna which has ferry connections to Bellagio which is how we're going to navigate the 3 main towns in the central part of the lake. I've already booked tickets for a day trip to Milan from Lierna through Trenord. The first leg of that ticket is via bus from Lierna to Lecco and then we transfer to train for the rest of the journey to Milan.

There is nothing to explore in Interlaken. Interlaken is a place where you change trains on the way to somewhere. It is a service town. I go there for shopping, or to see a doctor. There is not a lot of interest to tourists.

With three days use one day to do Murren - Schilthorn and anything else that you can fit in the route, and another for Wengen - Männlichen - Grindelwald (with the BO pass you can even go to Eigergletscher).

And spend a day on the lakes too. Try to catch the steamer "Lötschberg". It is a real steamer, and it has a play room for kids...

(Writing this from behind a Schwarzmönch at the Pension Gimmelwald :-) )

The Lötschberg steamboat sounds great, and it looks like it's included with the Berner Oberland pass. I've decided to drop Interlaken exploration off the itenerary based on all the feedback I've gotten. Perhaps it would be possible to do Grindelwald>Männlichen>Wengen on the same day as a Lake Brienze boat ride.

Luzern is fine, but the mountains are prettier. That is what you'll remember from the trip. Luzern is also very touristy and you will have already spent time in touristy cities. I took my 6 year old a few years back, and he remembers the cable cars, the zip lines, and the great playgrounds everywhere.

Yes, you can certainly catch the boat at Interlaken Ost on your way back to Oberried. When you use the SBB app you can set it to show you only the boat schedule (under ‘means of transport’ deselect bus and train).

Under the current schedule you could take a boat at 16:07, get off at Giessbach falls, spend a bit of time there and catch the boat going back towards Oberried. Not every sailing stops at Oberried, that is why you would do this longer journey, but a short stopover at Giessbach will be nice too!

Or - stay on the boat and go all the way to Brienz, from there catch a train back to Oberried.
