after our tour ends in early June 2024 in Zurich we have 2 free days before heading by train to Paris. Would appreciate thoughts on best place to spend the time in Switzerland

What tour? I wouldn't spend that time in either. They are nice cities, but not in the mountains. Luzern would be my choice, but it's not clear what your tour is covering. If you must choose one of those two, I'd go with Basel.

Luzern for sure. Only 1 to 1 1/4 hour to Basel where you catch a train to Paris. And only 45 minutes from Zurich.

I am not the original poster but have a similar question. I will be finishing a Rhine river cruise in Basel and have 4 nights to spend before taking a train to Paris. Does Basel deserve a couple of nights with day trip to Lucerne or should I go stay in Lucerne? Also considering a stop around Colmar on the way to Paris?

mkoch524, are you sure that your cruise itinerary doesnt include a stop in Colmar?
When we did a cruise, we headed from Basel to Luzern by train and spent the extra time there, flying out of Zurich. Easy. Luzern is in a beautiful setting, in the mountains on a cruisable lake. Plenty to do and see there. Basel is nice, but it's not in the mountains.
