We’re leaving for our Switzerland tour in one week, and the tour ends in Bern on Saturday. Our last night will be at Hotel Bären am Bundesplatz. We just received a notification that our return flight has been moved earlier—from 9 a.m. to 8 a.m.—and now we’re trying to figure out the best way to get to Zurich Airport that morning.
Here are the options we’re considering:
Option A: Take an Uber or taxi directly from Bern to Zurich Airport. The quotes we received are 300 CHF (about USD 370) and higher, and they charge even more for a 4 a.m. pickup.
Option B: Skip the farewell dinner, check out of our Bern hotel, and stay at an airport hotel the night before. However, most airport hotels are 200 CHF and up, and many do not include shuttle service—only the more expensive ones offer paid shuttles. We would still need to arrange transportation to the airport in the early morning.
Option C: Take the early train. We found a train leaving Bern at 4:18 a.m. that arrives at Zurich Airport at 5:41 a.m. This would give us roughly two hours to get through check‑in, security, and passport control. We’re not sure how busy Zurich Airport is around 6 a.m., especially for international departures.
We’d really appreciate advice from travelers who have faced a similar situation. Is the 4:18 a.m. train a reliable option for an 8 a.m. flight, or would you recommend staying near the airport instead?
