We are taking two back to back RS tours in late summer: Switzerland from Aug 27th to Sept 7th and the Loire to the South of France Sept 10th to September 21st. The Switzerland tour ends in Bern and we have three full days before we have to be in Chartres on Sept 10th. We are coming back to Paris after the end of the Loire tour and spending five days there before we fly home so we rather not spend time there twice. We are open to suggestions as what to do around Bern. Thank you.

I suggest Alsace. Colmar or Strasbourg make good bases for 3 nights, and it is quite fast to reach Paris for Chartres afterwards. You do have to cross Paris to change trains but that is unavoidable coming from Switzerland anyway.
Dijon/Beaune is another option if not covered by the tour already.
