We are trying to decide between these two towns for a day trip from Zurich. Any suggestions or recommendations on which one to choose?

one is the capital of the country with everything a city offers in a compact format; the other is a small town with a nice atmosphere.
They couldn't be much more different.
What would you like to find - why did you pick those two?
Did you consider Schaffhausen?
