Bern as a Daytrip loosing a day in Zürich or Lucerne?

I'm trying to force Bern on my packed itinerary as a day trip.
1. In the beginning
Day 1 Arrive Zurich 8 am
Day 2 Day trip to Bern or stay in Zürich
Day 3 Zurich to next destination

  1. At the end.
    Arrive Lucerne nighttime.
    Day 1 Mount Pilatus ( or not)
    Day 2 Spend day in Lucerne Town ...leave at nigth to Genève or leave early to Bern..spend day there then to Genève.

  2. Skip Bern altogether?

Many people skip Zürich. So I'm thinking 2 days in Lucerne are a minimum. Also I'm not sure I need to see Mt Pilatus after taking other mountain excursions somewhere else.
I would love to hear any suggestions.

Unless there is some compelling reason to be in Zurich, I'd skip it and split your time between Bern and Luzern/Lucerne. You could go directly to Luzern or Bern when you arrive. Bern is quite interesting, the old town and its fountains are charming and unique. We did a day trip to Bern from Luzern.

We did the boat across lake Luzern and then a cog wheel train to the top of Mt. Rigi. Highly recommend! Often the weather is more clear in the am.

I feel each summit has its own personality, and if you have clear weather, don't turn down the opportunity. Each summit offers its own unique experience. I never get tired or "mountained-out". Switzerland offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.
