Bern and Lucerne recommendations

We are going to be in Lucern and Bern in July after having visited Lauterbrunnen...we are looking for recommendations as to where to stay in both cities that is centrally located and within walking distance of (or actiually in) "old town."...Thank in advance.

Raf,

Last summer we stayed in the Hotel Goldener Stern Luzern (did not stay in Bern). sternluzern.ch

It was an easy 5-10 or so minute walk to the old town or the train station. We were looking for somewhere on the less expensive side, as opposed to somewhere more luxurious, and it was very nice. The room was small and the elevator even smaller. It made me laugh at the squeeze my husband and I had to do every time we got in the elevator at the same time. However it had one! It was not air conditioned - and I am not sure if other places would be or not. But it was exactly as promised on the website so we knew in advance. The restaurant downstairs was great (it was late the evening we arrived, so we ate there) -- and breakfast was wonderful. Depends on what you are looking for but we were happy with it. (We went from there to Lauterbrunnen.) Really the only problem was that it was a bit confusing upon arrival because the hotel sits over the restaurant and I didn't know that ahead of time. Would have no qualms about going back.

Can highly recommend the Tourist Hotel in Luzern! Room overlooking the river...steps from Old Town and Chapel Bridge...staff very helpful and accommodating. Price was best we found for September on the river.

Raf,

Here's another vote for Hotel Stern in Lucerne. I found the room very comfortable, and as previously mentioned both the restaurant and breakfasts were wonderful. The elevator wasn't a problem for me, as I usually travel solo. It's in a great location and an easy walk to the station, Chapel Bridge or other sights. However, when arriving with luggage you might consider using a Taxi from the station.

For your stay in Bern, you might have a look at Hotel Continental. The rooms are very modern and up-to-date, they serve a decent breakfast and it's also an easy walk to the station (perhaps 10-15 minutes). There are some nice restaurants in the area, and it's an easy walk to local sights.

Happy travels!

We enjoyed the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lucerne. It is within walking distance of the train station.
