We will be ending a cruise in Basil the end of November. We are looking at going to Lucerne. How long should we stay? Should we go back to Basil to fly home? Would appreciate any tips. Thank you!
Lucerne itself you can pretty much see in a full day - church, covered bridge, lion statue, all an easy walk. Lovely town for walking around but expensive like all of Switzerland. If you want a side trip like going up My Pilatus or a lake cruise you'd need more time.
It's a small country so several choices of airports. In order of which is closest - Zurich, Bern then Basel. Really depends on the best flight connections available for your sked. I've only flown out of Basel and it's fairly small, easy to negotiate airport.
debbie (its Basel, not Basil, which will mess you up when checking train schedules). If home is in the US, then more than likely you'll have direct flight options to the US from Zurich. There is a rail station at the Zurich airport (Flughafen) so it is easy to get there from Luzern by train, about 1 hour 20 min or so.
I would guess you are best going from Zurich airport. It is only 1 hour by direct train from Luzern, and you can get direct flights back to North America. At Basel, you have to transfer to a bus to get to the airport, and there are no flights to North America. You'd have to change planes somewhere else in Europe.
