Basel vs Zurich

Staying in Freiburg and would like to include a visit to either Basel or Zurich. Any opinions out there on which one would be best for a day trip?

what would you like to see? How did you choose those cities? Or was it just looking at a map and picking the two cities which stood out? Are you traveling by car or train? How many? What ages?

I'm afraid that without a bit of flesh on the bones a reasonable answer is not easily possible.

Me and my boyfriend will be staying in Freiburg and exploring the Black Forest in late July to early August. We both like outdoor activities and he also likes museums. We looked at the map last night and realized how close those two cities are and thought we could make a day trip to one of them. We are traveling by train.

First go to the DB site and price trips and timings. Because you are limited to the train, I'm tempted to say Basel. Both cities have fine museums. Investigate the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein because it may be accessible by taxi or city bus from Basel. (I had a car.) I don't think you can get to Augusta Raurica on a train daytrip.

Swimming in the Rhine, walking the sides of the Rhine, toy museum (a real hoot), the installation art including super cool mechanical fountain, great atmosphere, great market, fun trams (watch out for them) some of which even have WiFi, very easy to reach by train. Local into Basel Bad Bahnhof, ICE's into Basel SBB. An absolutely fun town with a great, if warped, sense of humour.

That's Basel.

I'll let somebody else go to bat for Zürich. It has never appealed to me, either by car or by train.

An advantage to going to Basel is you can get there using a Baden-Wuerttemberg ticket. Leave after 9 am on a weekday (there is a 9:15 RE train) and return in the evening will only cost 28 EUR, 24 EUR if you are under 26. Travel anytime on weekends, You must use regional trains only, but there are direct and very frequent regional trains from Freiburg. Also, your destination must be Basel Bad Bf, not Basel SBB. Basel Bad is still considered a German station, even though it is on the north side of Basel. You can travel from there around town on the trams with a local day pass.

Edit- And if your place of lodging in Freiburg participates in the KONUS program, it is free using the card.
