Basel to the Schluchtensteig Trail

We are planning to fly from the US to hike the Schluchtensteig Trail in the Black Forrest.

Basel is the closest international airport to the trail's beginning/end (Lauchringen/Wehr). I've read the Basel Airport has both Swiss (BSL) and French (MLH) sides so with MLH we could arrive directly in the EU. This would make customs/immigration easier. OTOH, it may make train connections more difficult as the train from Mulhouse seems to cross through Switzerland on its way both to and from the trail.

Does anyone have travel experience in this region to share?

Whether you arrive in Switzerland or EU is trivial. They are both in Schengen. To get to Wehr, the best way is through Basel SBB station and there are buses from Basel airport (on the Swiss side) to Basel SBB every 7 1/2 minutes. That is much easier than taking the shuttle bus to St Louis station then taking a train to Basel SBB, which is much less frequent than the buses.
