We will have a car (picked up at Zurich airport) for the first week and a half we are in Switzerland. I feel we need one because we're traveling into smaller towns around Berner Oberland for three nights (looking for my ancestors' records), then to a farmhouse in Gruyeres for three nights and finally into France where we are staying with friends for three nights outside of Dijon. They are expecting us to be able to drive around the area.
For the second half of the trip we'll be based in Basel. I thought I would ditch the car and just use trains to visit surrounding areas from there. We would like to see Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls in Germany as well as Strasbourg and Colmar in France. Maybe a day trip to Lucerne or somewhere else?
My question- is it difficult to take the Swiss trains into these other countries? Am I being foolish giving up the car? There are two adults and a 16 year old in our party. Any advice is appreciated! Haven't been to Switzerland since college in 1992 so I'm a little rusty. THANKS!
