Basel Switzerland hotel suggestions

We will be in Basel one night, any suggestions on best area to book a hotel for walking around for one day prior to river cruise?
Suggestion for a hotel under $300 would be appreciated. And any suggestions on what to see on such a short visit?

Thanks for your help

Without knowing your date, it is hard to make a suggestion for a hotel within your price range, because hotel prices vary from day to day, sometimes by a lot.

I suggest you go on booking.com and search for Basel hotels available on your date and within your price range. Pick a few you like, and come back here to ask for opinions on those.

We stayed in the Hotel Krafft for one night after a river cruise a couple of years ago.

We loved the hotel, it was on the other side of the river to the Old Town, but right near the bridge so a very easy walk or interested boat ride across the river, where they use the current to cross!

I'm not sure how much it would be now, but I wanted a riverside hotel with a balcony and we got that, with a massive room too, for a very good price compared to other riverside hotels.

There was a good breakfast too. We didn't eat any other meals there.

For just a one night stay, the area around the train station is convenient. Easy arrival from airport or train, no lugging bags around and plenty of taxis if you need one to get to your cruise dock. You can walk into central Basel (15-20 mins) or take one of the trams outside the station (free with your hotel booking). My go-to hotel there is the Schweizerhof. If you want something a little more upscale, there is a fairly new Mövenpick hotel just a few minutes walk from the station.

If you want to really be in the middle of everything, there is a nice Motel One in Barfüsserplatz, which is about as central as it gets in Basel. Not fancy, but decent price, clean/modern and very well located for a one night stay.

To see in Basel in one day - go to the Münster, Marktplatz (city hall), wander around the old town (up from Marktplatz towards Spalentor, from the Münster down towards Mittlere Brücke or towards the old St Alban paper mill) and walk along the Rhine on the other side of the river (in summer, it's fun to sit and watch people floating by). The tourist office has good suggestions for self-guided walking tours that you can mix and match. https://www.basel.com/en/activities-excursions/walks-old-town

There are some excellent museums in Basel, but if you only have a day and the weather is nice, I'd stick to just strolling around town unless you have a specific interest in one of the museums.

Both Teufelhof and Märthof are both very nice. Teufelhof is on the edge of the old town, has a bit of an artsy flair and very good associated restaurants. Märthof is a fairly new hotel in a beautiful building in the middle of the Marktplatz (busy main square). You can walk everywhere and there's a major tram stop nearby. It has a little more upscale/modern feeling. The only concern I'd have there is street noise (at least on lower floors) as there are a lot of tram lines going by and some construction going on, but you're only there for one night.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I did send an email to Au Violon and they got back to me saying they don't open up reservations so far out and did say they have rooms available, anyone stayed there? Looks very interesting

I did look at Der Teufelhof Basel, but it mentions 2 parts or 2 seperate buildings of the hotel , one is The Gallery and the other is Arts, are they seperate bulidings, one area nicer than other?

Thank you all for your wonderful advice, we booked Der Teufelhof Basel.
Basel looks beautiful, too bad we don't have more than the one night before the river cruise
