Basel -Carnival

Hi everyone ,

Does anyone have recommendations on what to do during Basel Carnival or recommendations on webpage for details. The official page doesn’t have too much to go on.

Also, what square has all the food trucks in the city? Or recommendations for a quick bite that is Swiss cuisine ?

Thanks and have a great day

Amy

Are you looking at carnivalofbasel.com? There seems to be a lot of info there.

My advice having gone twice:

  1. Best spot for Morgenstreich at 4 AM is Muensterplatz. In the past at least there was a tent to get coffee in and spots to lean/sit on in the square a bit plus it was not insanely crowded. The other main plazas are zoos and should be avoided. Line up your taxi with the hotel the night before and plan to get there early like 3:15 - probably need to walk from where the cab drops you.

  2. View from the cathedral roof once it opens at 10 is lovely.

  3. We liked the main square in front of town hall for the parade. By 1 is early enough. Unless you want to be on the bridge - that seems to fill earlier. Parade is at 1:30.

  4. Walliser Kane was great for fondu. Make a reservation.

  5. Make a reservation for Monday dinner. We did not and could not find ANYWHERE to eat.

  6. If you are up for a bonus thing, there is a cool fire parade: Liestal Chienbaesel at 7 PM Sunday. The train takes you there easily from Basel. Google pictures. https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/experiences/events/chienbaese/

  7. If you are there on Tuesday still the Aquibasilea pool is quite nice to stop by. If you go there, the town the pool is outside of has a quirky Italian restaurant with great food (it looks like it in the warehouse area but inside is pleasant and very tasty food): Gli Amici - Anitchi Sapori It was a highly unique experience.

Good luck!
