In late April, I will have 3 -4 days to spend in the Basel area before boarding a river cruise to Amsterdam. We're open to renting a car and traveling a bit in Switzerland or other close areas. What are some highlights that we should consider?
I would spend time visiting the many neighborhoods of Basel +/- a daytrip to Bern (1.5 hours by train).
Basel has a MULTITUDE of museums and a lively walkable old town.
Plenty of cafes along the river, a cathedral, awesome Rathaus, and cool tethered boat system to cross the river!
Luzern is 2 hours by train, but often OVERRUN by tourists. Nuff said.
Use the train site/app to estimate travel time and cost.

Freiburg Germany and Colmar France are both easily accessible by train from Basel and would make wonderful day trips!.
Our family enjoyed visiting Freiburg Germany which is a 45 minute train ride away. I hope you have a really great time wherever you choose to spend your time.
Some great suggestions already.
If you have any interest in cars or trains, Mulhouse has a world-class car museum (Musée National de l'Automoile) and an excellent train museum (Cite du Train). Mulhouse is otherwise pretty dire, but very close to Basel by train.
