My husband and I will be in the Lauterbrunnen area in July. We are wondering if we should stay in Lauterbrunnen as a base camp and go from there to hike and explore in the Verbier and Zermatt area? or should we get a place to stay in Lauterbrunnen and in Zermatt?
Lauterbrunnen is 2.5 hours by rail from Zermatt, so one is not a feasible base for the other.
Spend a few days in each place. One base won't really work due to transit times. The hiking is overall better in Lauterbrunnen area, FYI, but there are some gorgeous ones in Zermatt, too.
Verbier is quite far from Lauterbrunnen - if you have a car it's about 2 1/2 hours...even longer if you're taking a train. From Zermatt it's a good 3 hours or so to drive. I would spend a few nights in all three in order to hike, especially in Zermatt. If the weather is bad then you have a couple of days for it to clear up. You may want to consider leaving your itinerary flexible to allow for weather issues.
Another worthwhile hike in the area is Mont Fort - it's one of the highest peaks in the area with spectacular views from the top! The highest bar in Europe is up there adding an extra perk! There's a great town in the valley below called Sion - fantastic area with hillsides covered on vineyards and castles dotting the valley.
