We are planning a trip to Switzerland in August. At Ricks suggestion( Rick Steve"s Switzerland) we are going to do The Golden Pass, The William Tell Express, and the Bernina Express. We have a Global Pass so local trains to and from are not an issue. We would like some suggestions on where to stay (cities) that would be logistically favorable for these three trains. We have some ideas but would like some advise from someone who has done the same or similar trip. Thanks
Where does your trip start? Do you fly into Zurich or come by train from Paris, or other route? If you're traveling west to east, you can stay in Montreux, take the Golden Pass to Interlaken and/or Luzern, then William tell to Lugano, then the whole Bernina Express bus/train combo east and north via St. Moritz to Chur. Is that the basic plan?
Rick's first choice, more than any one scenic train, is spending time in the Berner Oberland area, above Interlaken, to really get high on the mountain lifts, and to slow down and commune with the cows on the hikes.
We are actually flying into Amsterdam, and plan on taking the EN to Zurich, so that will be our gateway into Switzerland. If this changes your reply please let us know. Thanks for the help.
