I'm starting to plan clothes for our hiking trip.....and the temperatures I'm seeing in Murren are hovering around 80 for a high. Is that correct? (On the Underground site) When I look for an average in September, I see around 60. Is it unusually warm right now up in the mountains?
Not sure what 60 and 80 degrees farenheit are but typically average temps for September are from minimum around 5 to maximum 15 degrees celsius. This can vary dramatically as Murren is in the Alps at a reasonably high altitude.
The sun always makes it feel warmer too.
The best packing advice is to bring layers. For Sept., you need to be prepared for hot and cold.
A quick look at weather forecasts of 1st to 10th September shows 15 and rain cooling to as low as 10 as the week goes on but eventually clearing for a few days.
What hikes are you planning?
Totally off topic, but the location of Dead Horse Gap is pretty awesome. My apologies for violating Community Guideline #1.
Dave I believe it is currently a chilly 1° C at the Gap at the moment but would be much cooler up top on Kossie (Australia's highest point a solid little hilly hike from the Gap).
I am currently down in the lower country of the Whipstick however.
Some good history around the area of Dead Horse Gap, search out the names Jack Riley and Banjo Patterson.
Sorry gang for wandering off topic.
I went on the website www.meteoswiss.admin.ch and it looks like it's averaging 25 degrees celsius in Wengen....that's about 77 degrees fahrenheit. That seems high for Aug. 13th, doesn't it? And, that seems the average for the next 10 days. So, I'm guessing, it might be much warmer than usual the beginning of September. However, I will be packing layers of course....but maybe an extra pair of hiking shorts !
It has been a warm summer in the Alps this year, but this may be the new normal. It was hot enough in Mürren when we were there in August 2018 that I was glad I brought a pair of shorts, and I did wear them hiking one day. Three days after that, the heat wave broke with a huge late afternoon thunderstorm; we were glad to be safe in a hotel in Chamonix at that point. But the first two days of our Tour du Mont Blanc we wore our rain gear, including rain pants.
The mountain weather can change at any time. You cannot rely on a forecast 2+weeks ahead, especially in the mountains. And especially for hiking, you should be prepared for anything from near-freezing temperatures to 80’s, with rain and possibly snow in the mix. Last September in the Dolomites we needed all of our layers on certain days, but just light clothing on others.
thank you. Yes. It seems to be the new normal. And, we will pack for every kind of weather.
Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something. It just seemed odd.
At the moment it is warmer than usual. We went on a walk from Wengwald (where we live) to the Almend restaurant for lunch, and I really needed that beer when I arrived.
Note: The Innerwengen chairlift operates this summer, on weekends, and even some days during the week. Walking to Innerwengen, taking the chairlift up, lunch at Allmend, then walk back, and a nice leisurely Sunday was had...
Use a local weather forecast, like Meteoschweiz, or Meteoblue. US weather sites often have no clue about alpine weather.
Pack layers. September can be very nice, but it can also be cool. And as soon as the sun is down it always cools down quite significantly.
thank you WengenK
That's a big help. Will use that local weather forecast.
We can't wait ! oh, will plan on a few extra beers!
cheers !
We’re in Murren for the summer and it’s really not predictable. For example, the last 2 weeks were a bit chillier, in the 40s-60s (it even snowed right above Wengen at Männlichen) and then it took a turn this weekend and is now in the 80s. When visiting the area, layers are your best option, so that you can deal with the potential for a sunny day in the 80s and a chilly evening in the 40s.
I will be staying in Lauterbrunnen Valley, nights of 24, 25, 26 September on the RS Alpine Tour. I will pack layers and rain gear, etc. A pair of shorts, a fleece jacket, etc. trying to cover all weather possibilities.
Wanderweg: If it's 40 degrees, I will either be in bed, or in a fleece in front of the bar with a scotch and water!
But thank you!
I will be ready for anything !
