My husband and I were supposed to be staying with a friend for the first 3 days of our vacation outside of Zurich...just today I've learned that's not going to work out. I've done absolutely ZERO planning for this segment of the trip...we don't have a place to stay or have any idea of what to do. We could also do a day or so in Munich...We arrive the morning of the 23 and need to be in Salzburg on the 26.

You're flying into Switzerland so stay in Switzerland for 3 days. Assuming you will ride the wonderful Swiss trains...hop on the train directly under the airport when you arrive and head for Lucerne. You can easily spend 3 days there. It's about a 50 minute train ride.
Once you make a hotel reservation, I'm sure you'll feel more comfortable, Rachel. Transportation and sightseeing don't need reservations. If you don't have a guidebook, you can get an overview of sights in Luzern or Berner Oberland at http://www.ricksteves.com/europe/switzerland. The Luzern Tourist Office or Jungfrau region office are also starting points for hotel listings and other info.
