So we are flying into Zurich probably April 14, 2023. Tentative itinerary:
Zurich straight to Lucerne 2 night, to Bernese Oberland area 2 nights, bern 2 nights, to Basel to catch cruise.
Should we rent car in Zurich or Lucerne?
Any problem with highways or roads being icy or snowy at that time of year?
Are trams, mountain trains open that time of year?
Suggestions on lodging open then especially in mountain towns?
Open to any suggestions.
Why rent a car in Switzerland when rail is absolutely spectacular? You would need to check online for when mountain cable cars and gondolas are to be closed for maintenance because it will be a week or two in April.
I'd skip Bern, and I'd do it all by rail. All those places are easily and comfortably reachable by rail. It takes a lot of time to get from one place to another in the mountains, so two nights can really mean only one whole day actually free to see anything.
