April in the Berner Oberland

A group of four of us (two couples) will be going on a River Cruise of the Rhine and Mosel Rivers next month. The tour starts with two days in Zurich before heading to Basel to start the cruise. We wanted to take one of the days in Zurich to take the train to Lauterbrunnen or Wengen. We are wondering what to expect on April 2nd in Lauterbrunnen or Wengen. Will trails be open for hiking? Will these areas still have a lot of snow? What might we expect to find if we travel to this part of the Berner Oberland?

Lauterbrunnen is a bit far from Zurich for a day-trip, about 2.5 hours one-way. It's doable, but know that 5 hours of your day will be spent on a train. And if the weather is poor, it will be for naught. Low-altitude trails may be open in April but snowfalls are still possible. Higher altitude trails will be closed.

A much easier day-trip is to Luzern, about an hour away. It's a cute town in its own right, so even if the weather is a little grumpy you can have fun exploring the city. If the weather is good, you can visit Mt. Rigi or Mt. Pilatus easily from Luzern.
