Appenzell visit---three nights too long?

We plan to drive from Salzburg so will really only have 2 full days in Appenzell----plan to go up the Ebenalp one day and visit Stein and their cheese factory and folk museum the other day. Has anyone stayed at RS recommended Haus Lydia or Gastezimmer Koller-Rempfler?

Does anyone recommend another small town instead? We will then going to Stresa (on Lake Maggiore).

Thanks, Cary Miller, Hayden ID

Cary,

IMO, three nights in Appenzell is about perfect, especially as you plan on spending a day at Ebenalp and then the cheese factory and folk museum. As I recall, a folk music concert takes place at the town hall one night a week, but I can't remember which night that was.

I stayed at Hotel Cafe Adler in Appenzell, and would certainly recommend it. However, one point to note is that their Café and Shop are closed for renovations at the moment, but the hotel is apparently still open. You'd have to check with them for current status.

Thanks, yet again, Ken. Where haven't you been?!

Cary,

"Where haven't you been?!"

Lots of places. Give me time, I'm working on it.

We did this same trip two years ago. The Ebenalp suggestion is a good one. Take the cablecar up and have lunch at the top and explore the wind chapel. You can walk down to Seealpsee in about an hour and half where there is an idillic lake with two restaurants. If you are really ambitious it is about an hour from the top of the Ebenalp cablecar to Berghaus Schaefler which has amazing views. Truly a magical place! Enjoy.

General rule with the Alps- without the benefit of a short-term weather forecast, three nights is the minimum amount of time you want to stay in any one location. Weather can (and often does) rain out entire days in the mountains. Give yourself enough flexibility in your schedule to allow for this possibility.
