Appenzell to Zurich Airport Question

My husband and I (72 and 68) are travelling to Germany and Switzerland in September. Plan now is to spend 2 of the last 3 nights in Appenzell, Switzerland at Hotel Appenzell. We are planning to leave the night before our flight home (United flight at 10:10 a.m.) to take the train to Zurich and spend the night there prior to our flight the next morning.

I see that if we stay in Appenzell for 3 nights that we can get the Appenzell Card with many benefits attached. We are considering staying the 3rd night in Appenzell and taking a private car directly to Zurich Airport the morning of our flight back to the US instead of staying in Zurich hotel the night before the flight. The hotel cost in Zurich is the same as the one in Appenzell. I realize the cost of the limo is much higher than the train, but we do save on some things while in Appenzell if we use the savings card. I guess I was hoping to have the extra time in Appenzell instead of staying directly in Zurich.

Thoughts and suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you.

That is an interesting question.
We have never stayed 3 consecutive nights in an Appenzell hotel to take advantage of the Card. We were always interested in it but our schedules didn't work.

You could avoid the cost of the car ride and just take the train.

According to SBB website, the train departs Appenzell every half hour and takes about 1:36 to get to the airport. A 6am departure arrives at the Zurich airport at 7:36am with only one change at Gossau. That should be plenty early for your return flight. Zurich airport isn't huge and is pretty easy to navigate.

Jay, thank you for your suggestion. I will check out the SBB website for our train options.

I probably will feel less anxious if we take the train to Zurich the night before our flight and just have a short trip to the airport the next morning. If we leave in the afternoon from Appenzell, we can still get a half day in for some sightseeing or activity.

I always try to be in my city of departure the night before. Some disagree, but my theory is that if there should be any delays because of train problems, etc. I don't want to be 60-100 miles away and then try to find alternate transportation to catch a flight.

If you want to take advantage of the Appenzell Card, just arrive a day sooner in Appenzell.
