Appenzell lodgings?

RS recommends Appenzell. It looks cute and there is a wonderful hike nearby. However, when I put that town in a well known hotel app, I get no hotels in town. Is there is a lack of hotel space? Do people generally stay in St Gallen or elsewhere, and ride in for the day?

We just returned from a ten day trip in Switzerland. We stayed 4 days in Murren; 3 days in Lucerne; and 3 days in Appenzell. Seeing that we were in Murren, it may be hard for folks to believe my next statement. By far our favorite was Appenzell. The view doesn’t come close to Murren but for overall experience, it was the best.

We stayed at Hotel Appenzell in a room overlooking the village center. No a/c but with all of the windows it was fine. The hotel also has a lift and the food was wonderful (we did the half boad). Because we stayed three nights, we received the Appenzell Card and took full advantage.

The area hiking was was vast and diverse.

Enthusiastically recommend Appenzell and Hotel Appenzell!

We have stayed at the Panorama Hotel Freudenberg a couple of times as well as Gashaus Hof.
Like other's have stated, we contact the hotels directly and never use an app.

Panorama Hotel Freudenberg overlooks the town and is very quiet. It is about a 1km walk from the train through residential streets.
Gasthaus Hof is in town, a shorter walk from the train and close to the walking area.

I'd stay in either hotel again.

I too relied on the RS Switzerland guidebook. On our trip in July we stayed at the Hotel Adler. It has no air conditioning but you can leave the windows wide open in your room. The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. The owner even called a PublCar (taxi) for us so we could get to Stein for its cheese factory and folk museums. Appenzell is a cute little town and I'd recommend staying there.

I recently took the RS Best of Switzerland tour. It included one night in Appenzell. We stayed at Hotel Adler and enjoyed it.

We just stayed at Hotel Adler in Appenzell - very cute hotel, clean rooms and wonderful staff. The visit to Ebenalp and hike to Aescher- is not to be missed. Appenzell is a fairy tale town!
