Anyone willing to double check my math on travel passes?

Oh my - I have spent 3+ hours determining the costs of our trip with the various passes. Is anyone willing to double check if I'm missing something below??? I cannot explain how much I'd appreciate it!! It will be 2 adults and 2 youths (15 yrs old). It's messy because I'm copying and pasting from a spreadsheet but the first number colum is the Swiss Travel Pass, 2nd is Berner Oberland Pass, 3rd is Half Fare Card and 4th is BOP with HFC.

Checking your math for this is going to be an endeavor but first off, did you calculate in that if you do the Half Fare Card, Half Fare Card + BO Pass or Swiss Travel Pass that you can get the free Family card making your 2 kids 100% free? Right off the bat that completely knocks out option #2 of only the BO pass, as having your kids be free on everything drastically effects the numbers. I'll send you a DM and perhaps I can help you a bit better than this current format :)

you do realize it's possible to overthink this, yes? Travel costs money and at some point, you'll pay a bit more than you should have for something. That's how it goes.

for an endeavor this large, you should do business with the Aplins in the Alps. it's what they do.

Wanderweg - yes I (tried) to account for my kids being free on the Swiss Travel Pass and Half Fare Card. Thank you!

You can always run something like this through ChatGPT or some other AI. I wouldn't do the copy and paste, but I would just upload the spreadsheet to it, ask your question, and it will give you a response in a few seconds.

I did that earlier in the year when I was making a list of all the British TV shows that people had talked about to make it handy for people to look at. I started doing it in Excel, and After five minutes, when my eyes started to glaze over, I realized I had to find a new way and ran it through ChatGPT. Within seconds I had a complete spreadsheet that was very accurate.

I would be careful about using ChatGPT for stuff like this. It gives off the wall answers sometimes, particularly when it comes to travel info like this. It's helpful to a point but can also steer you in crazy directions. I saw it suggest driving up to Murren in an itinerary once.....

Why is the boat from Luzern to Alpnachstad listed as 0.00 with the HFC?

No one's asking it for travel directions here. It's just adding math, which is what it does best. I've been using AI for the last two years for travel, and I've got the prompts down well enough so that it very rarely makes a mistake. That doesn't mean that it doesn't, but I always check it, get the error taken care of and run it it through again. Considering how long it would take the OP to put this together, having AI do it would save so much time, even with time spent on checking for errors.

Ok so my title is misleading. I trust my actual math (it's in Excel). Just don't know if I input anything wrong as far as what costs what for which pass.

Well I can tell you right now that some of your math isn't correct.

For example....
Zurich - Bern 0.00 107.20 26.80 26.80
You have full fare for 2 adults at 107.20 but half fare at 26.80? That doesn't make sense.
Then you have Schilthorn to Murren free with the half fare card? The 91.40 is only one way....

That's just me skimming super quick, but my guess is there are other issues.

Not sure how to reply to a specific comment so wanderdeg I believe it's because with the half fare my two daughters are free but with just the oberland pass they are not (so it's kind of 4 people full fare vs 2 at half fare)

Ok, then you're still off because full fare for one person from Zurich to Bern is around 50-60 chf, so that number would need to be more like 200-240 chf, not 107.20. And again, full fare for the Schilthorn roundtrip is 91.40 per person, so that number would need to be around 400 chf. Full fare for ONE person from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen is 32 chf and it's not included in the Swiss Travel Pass. Also, Oeschinensee is no longer included in the Berner Oberland Pass this year, nor is Kleine Scheidegg.

Bottom line - the SBB website and app defaults to half fare card pricing, so basically all these numbers need to be multiplied by 2 if I had my guess without going through each single line. I think when you looked these up you didn't toggle over to full fare, so all your numbers are off by quite a bit.

Wanderweg: SBB is showing me that full fare from Lucerne to Bern is around 23 chf (in my calcs I used 26.8 times 4 people). I did have a hard time determining the price of Wengen to Schilthorn because I don't understand how to read the fare table. However Google AI (which I generally hate) says that with a Swiss Travel Pass it's 45.70 chf per adult. Can you show me where you're seeing differnt fares for Lucerne to Bern and Wengen to Schilthorn?

Sam: I reached out directly to the Golden Round Trip people and they told me multiple times that with the STP or the HFC the boat is fully covered so all you have to pay for is the ascent/decent from Alpnachstad to Kriens.

OK, I spent some time and went over most of these, and I have some discrepancies, but the general price variation is close. You can see that the HFC with the Family Card is the lowest cost, and generally that is true for most of these types of exercises. Just remember that you must buy tickets with every single trip, perhaps not too difficult if you buy with the SBB app. BOP with HFC plus FC, is next, and many trips you just hop on without buying a ticket.

Then you misunderstood them because nothing is ever fully included (i.e. "free") with a half fare card. The half fare card means exactly that, half fare.

The bottom line on reading fare tables. Go directly to SBB.ch/en and put in your dates and exact routes, toggle to full fare and correctly select roundtrip if needed at "buy" and it will give you the most accurate fares for the exact dates/times/routes you're planning.

Sam - I cannot thank you enough. I show the HFC with Family Pass as the lowest too. You are so kind to take a close look. I truly appreciate it.

Well, in this case, the Pilatus website is quoting 59.90 CHF for the Golden Round Trip with the Half Fare Card, and children on the Family Card are free. The Golden Round Trip includes the boat from Luzern to Alpnachstad, then the cogwheel train to Pilatus Kulm, then trip down by 3-stage cable lift to Kriens, then bus back to Luzern station. So the boat may not be "free", but it is included in the unified Golden Round Trip ticket.
